First Step In Creating Allergy Awareness At My High School

Today I had the opportunity to speak at my schools staff meeting on behalf of allergic youth. I was asked to speak by the principal and I jumped on the opportunity! I spent all weekend planning what I would say and how I would make it effective. My plan was to educate them on what allergic youth go through on a daily basis, how they can help and also train them on the new Allerject. I made sure what I said was personal to my situation but also inclusive to all students with allergies. I was quite nervous seeing as many of these teachers have doubted my allergies in the past and have at times not understood the severity of anaphylaxis. I was shaking like a leaf and my papers were fluttering away, but I pulled myself together and knew that what I was doing would pay off. I want the teachers to realize that our allergies effect us physically but also emotionally. We need them to be understanding and accommodating. Teachers often feel that by high school we should be able to deal with our allergies on our own. Truth is I am just 16, I need help sometimes and we need support. I really hope that my speech made them realize what we go through! Also the Allerject was a hit! I had a microphone so everyone could hear the instructions it was giving, which was great! I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to speak to staff and it was a great start for creating awareness at my school. 🙂
